The medical examination is the first formal step towards a Polish driving licence — without the certificate you can't set up your Candidate Driver Profile (PKK). It costs 200 zł, takes about fifteen minutes and in the vast majority of cases ends with a positive result. Here's everything worth knowing before your visit.

What exactly the doctor checks
- Eyesight — visual acuity (letter chart), field of vision, colour recognition (important for traffic lights). This is the most important part of the examination.
- Hearing — a rough check, usually a conversation and a whisper test.
- Mobility — a general assessment of your musculoskeletal system and coordination.
- Health interview — chronic conditions (diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease), medications, alcohol and other substances. Answer truthfully — concealing a condition can mean legal liability if you're involved in an accident.
- Blood pressure and general health.
Where to get the examination
- Occupational medicine clinics / authorised doctors — the most common choice; you can find them in the registers of regional occupational medicine centres.
- Through your driving school — many OSKs (Ośrodek Szkolenia Kierowców — driving schools) arrange examinations on site on the day you enrol (same 200 zł cost, no searching required). For expats, this is often the easiest route — the school handles the logistics.
- Driver examination centres — in larger cities, often walk-in with no appointment.
Note: the certificate can only be issued by a doctor authorised to examine drivers — a regular GP is not enough. If your Polish is limited, ask your driving school to recommend a doctor who speaks English; in bigger cities this is rarely a problem, and the examination itself is simple enough to get through with basic communication.
Glasses, contact lenses, chronic conditions
- A vision defect doesn't rule out a driving licence — the doctor will add code 01 (driving with corrective lenses). Bring your glasses or contact lenses to the examination and, if you have one, your prescription.
- Diabetes, epilepsy and other conditions — may require an additional specialist consultation; the final decision rests with the certifying doctor. It usually ends with a shorter certificate validity, not a refusal.
- Psychological tests are not required for category B — they apply to professional drivers (C, D, taxi) and people referred for them, e.g. after exceeding the penalty point limit.
How to prepare for the visit
- Bring an identity document (passport or residence card works for foreigners) and your glasses or lenses if you wear them.
- Get a good night's sleep and avoid alcohol the day before — blood pressure readings matter.
- Prepare a list of any medications you take.
- Schedule the examination before your visit to the office — the certificate is required for the PKK application.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the medical examination for a driving licence cost?
The fee for the candidate driver medical examination is set by regulation at 200 zł. An examination including psychological tests (required for professional drivers, among others) costs around 350 zł, and the full package for categories C/D — 550–650 zł.
What does the doctor check during the driving licence examination?
The doctor mainly assesses your eyesight (visual acuity, field of vision, colour recognition), hearing, mobility and general health, including the cardiovascular and nervous systems. They also ask about chronic conditions, medications you take and diabetes. The examination for category B usually takes 15–20 minutes.
How long is the medical certificate valid?
For category B the certificate can be valid for a maximum of 15 years, but the doctor may shorten this period — for example due to a vision defect or a chronic condition.
Are glasses a problem during the examination?
No. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to the examination — the doctor will add a code to the certificate requiring you to drive with corrective lenses (code 01), which simply means you must drive wearing your glasses or lenses.
