Getting a category B driving license in Poland in 2026 is an expense worth planning for — especially since exam fees went up on 1 January 2026 for the first time in 12 years, and the government has also announced an increase in the fee for issuing the license document itself. If you're an expat going through this process, the good news is that the whole path is well defined — and the theory exam is officially available in English. Below is the full, up-to-date cost breakdown: from the PKK, through the course, to the exams and picking up your license.

Every failed attempt adds roughly 57 PLN (theory) or roughly 230 PLN (practical) plus, usually, a few remedial driving hours — with bad luck the total can exceed 7,000 PLN. Step 1: Medical examination — 200 PLN

Before you can enrol in a course, you need a medical certificate. The fee for the candidate driver examination is fixed by law at 200 PLN. For category B it takes about 15–20 minutes — the doctor mainly checks your eyesight, hearing, coordination and general health. A category B certificate can be valid for up to 15 years (the doctor may shorten that period). You don't need to speak Polish fluently for this — many clinics in larger cities have English-speaking doctors, and the examination itself is straightforward.

Step 2: PKK — 0 PLN

The PKK (Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę — your electronic candidate driver profile, required before any course or exam) is free to set up — online via gov.pl (if you have a "profil zaufany" trusted profile) or in person at the transport department (wydział komunikacji) of your local county office (starostwo). Foreigners without a trusted profile usually do it in person; bring your medical certificate, a photo (approx. 40–60 PLN at a photographer), and your ID or residence card. You'll give your PKK number to your driving school and when booking the exam.

New in 2026: from 3 March 2026, 17-year-olds can start the category B course (with written parental or guardian consent). Until they turn 18, they may only drive with a "mentor passenger" — a driver at least 25 years old with a minimum of 5 years of driving experience.

Step 3: The course — your biggest expense

Category B course prices in 2026 depend mostly on the city:

The price covers the statutory minimum: 30 hours of theory and 30 hours of practical driving. In bigger cities — Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław — many schools offer courses with English-speaking instructors, sometimes at a small premium; it's worth asking directly. Be careful with offers priced well below the market — they're often topped up with extra charges (internal exam, materials, "unlocking" driving sessions).

Extra hours: 100–180 PLN/h. Statistically, most candidates buy a few additional hours before the exam — realistically add 500–1,000 PLN to your budget.

Step 4: The state exams

Since 1 January 2026, fees are set by regional (voivodeship) assemblies, so the price list depends on your WORD:

Step 5: Getting the document

After passing both exams, you pay 100 PLN for the license to be issued. Note: the government has announced an adjustment of administrative vehicle fees — once it comes into force, the fee will rise to 115.50 PLN (the first change in about 12 years). Check the current amount at your local office before paying.

How to actually save money

1. Pass the theory on the first try. This is the easiest saving — every retake means another fee and weeks of waiting. Work through the official exam questions and take mock exams until you consistently score above the 68/74 pass mark.
2. Compare driving schools (OSK), not just prices. A school's student pass rate tells you more than a 200 PLN difference in course price.
3. Don't skimp on extra hours if you feel you need them — they're cheaper than a failed practical exam (fee + stress + more weeks of waiting).
