Polish Driving License Categories 2026 — Full Table of Entitlements and Minimum Ages

Poland has 16 driving license categories, following the standard EU framework — so a license earned here is valid across the European Union. Below you'll find the complete table with minimum ages and entitlements — updated for the biggest change of 2026: category B available from age 17.

As of: July 2026. MPW = maximum permissible weight (DMC in Polish documents). For categories C and D, a lower age is possible after completing initial qualification for professional drivers.

Category B from age 17 — the change of 3 March 2026

The most talked-about change in years: 17-year-olds can take the category B course and exam. The conditions:

• written consent from a parent or legal guardian (required already at course and exam sign-up),
• until turning 18 (or for the first 6 months), driving only with a mentor passenger — a driver who is at least 25 years old and has held a category B license for a minimum of 5 years,
• the entitlement is valid only within Poland,
• no taxi passenger transport or occasional passenger services,
• a 3-year probation period with a zero-alcohol limit (0.0‰) and a 12-penalty-point cap.

Motorcycle categories: AM → A1 → A2 → A

The motorcycle system is tiered — the more power, the higher the required age:

• AM (14) — mopeds up to 45 km/h; the entry-level category, popular with teenagers.
• A1 (16) — motorcycles up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW.
• A2 (18) — motorcycles up to 35 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio of up to 0.2 kW/kg).
• A (24) — unrestricted; if you've held A2 for at least 2 years, the threshold drops to 20.

Worth knowing: holders of category B for at least 3 years can ride a motorcycle up to 125 cm³ (A1 scope) in Poland without any additional exam.

How many driving license categories are there in Poland? 16: AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, B+E, C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E and T.

Can I tow a trailer with category B? Yes — a light one, up to 750 kg MPW. Heavier trailers require category B+E (or code 96 for combinations up to 4.25 t).

Does a category B license let me drive a quad? Yes — category B includes the B1 scope (quadricycles) as well as AM.

From what age can you start the category B course? The course can begin 3 months before reaching the required age — so from 3 March 2026, as early as 16 years and 9 months (exam from the 17th birthday, with parental consent).
