Knowing the fine schedule isn't just about protecting your wallet — questions about the consequences of traffic offences also appear on the theory exam. Below are the fine rates and penalty point rules in force in Poland in 2026. If you're an expat driving on a foreign licence, note that penalty points still accumulate against you while driving in Poland — these rules apply to everyone on Polish roads.

| 71 km/h and more | 2500 zł | 5000 zł | 15 |
As of: September 2026. Repeat offence = the same offence within 2 years.
Speeding is statistically the most common offence in Poland — fixed speed cameras alone recorded over 734,000 violations in 2025. You can brush up on the speed limits for different road types in the speed limits category and in our guide to driving on motorways and expressways.
Penalty points: limits and rules
- General limit: 24 points. Exceeding it = licence revoked and a retake of the exam.
- New drivers: 20 points in the first year after the licence is issued.
- 17-year-olds (cat. B from 3 March 2026): 12 points during the 3-year probationary period — exceeding it means mandatory road hazard training; a zero-alcohol limit (0.0‰) also applies.
- Maximum for a single offence: 15 points.
- Points from a single incident add up (e.g. speeding + overtaking on a crossing).
The 15-point offences — the blacklist
- overtaking on a pedestrian crossing or directly before it,
- failing to give way to a pedestrian stepping onto a crossing,
- exceeding the speed limit by more than 70 km/h,
- driving under the influence of alcohol,
- failing to stop for a police check.
These are exactly the behaviours that end the practical exam with an immediate fail — the exam's "red lines" and the fine schedule are consistent. You can practise the pedestrian priority rules in the behaviour towards pedestrians category.
Other common fines (a selection)
| Offence | Fine |
|---|---|
| Failing to give way to a pedestrian | 1500 zł (repeat: 3000 zł) |
| Overtaking on / before a pedestrian crossing | 1500 zł (repeat: 3000 zł) |
| Running a red light | 500 zł |
| Using a hand-held phone while driving | 500 zł |
| Not wearing a seatbelt | 100 zł |
| Carrying a child without a child seat | 300 zł |
| Failing to stop for a police check | 2500 zł |
As of: September 2026. The full schedule runs to several hundred entries — the above are the most common.
How points "expire"
Penalty points are erased after 2 years — counted from the day the fine is paid (with an unpaid fine the clock runs differently, which can be a trap). You can check your point balance online via the "Sprawdź swoje punkty karne" (check your penalty points) service on gov.pl (a trusted profile — the Polish government e-ID — is required).
Why this matters before the exam
Questions about point limits, behaviour towards pedestrians and the consequences of drink-driving regularly appear in the basic part of the theory test — and they carry the highest weight of 3 points (how the scoring works). Practise them in the mock exam or in the Prawo Jazdy GO app for iOS and Android.

Where can I check my points? Online on gov.pl ("Sprawdź swoje punkty karne", trusted profile required).

Frequently asked questions
How many penalty points can you have in 2026?
The limit is 24 penalty points. For new drivers — in the first year after obtaining a licence — the limit is 20 points. Exceeding the limit means losing your licence and having to retake the exam.
How much is a speeding fine in Poland in 2026?
From 50 zł (up to 10 km/h over) to 2500 zł (71 km/h or more over the limit). For repeat offences — committing the same offence again within 2 years — fines for exceeding the limit by 31 km/h or more are doubled, up to a maximum of 5000 zł.
What is the repeat offence rule for fines?
If within 2 years you commit the same serious offence again (e.g. significant speeding), the fine is doubled — for example, 1000 zł for exceeding the limit by 41–50 km/h rises to 2000 zł.
What can you get 15 penalty points for?
The maximum of 15 points applies to, among others: overtaking on or directly before a pedestrian crossing, failing to give way to a pedestrian, exceeding the speed limit by more than 70 km/h, drink-driving, and failing to stop for a police check.
