Manoeuvring Area Tasks 2026 — Every Category B Exam Task Explained

The manoeuvring area (plac manewrowy) — a closed course at the WORD exam center — is the first part of the Polish practical exam, and the place where a surprising number of candidates fail before they ever get to drive in the city. Below is the complete checklist of tasks with assessment criteria.

Task 1: Preparing to drive

You get in and demonstratively adjust: the seat, the side and rear-view mirrors, the headrest, then fasten your seatbelt and check that the doors are closed. Even if everything is already set correctly — show that you're checking. The examiner assesses the procedure, not just the end result.

Task 2: Vehicle checks (czynności kontrolno-obsługowe)

The examiner draws random questions such as: check the oil, coolant or brake fluid level, turn on the low or high beams, show the hazard lights. The examiner asks in Polish, so learn the key vocabulary with your instructor beforehand — olej (oil), płyn hamulcowy (brake fluid), światła mijania (low beams). Before the exam, open the bonnet of the car you'll be taking the exam in and make sure you can point out every reservoir. Task 3: The "łuk" (arc) — forward and reverse along a marked lane

Statistically the most common place to fail the exam on the manoeuvring area. You drive forward through a marked, arc-shaped lane, then reverse back along it — without touching the lines or hitting the cones, and while visibly observing your surroundings (windows, mirrors).

The key rules: drive slowly (half-clutch), position the car correctly right at the entry, correct with small steering movements, and when reversing, keep your eyes where the rear of the car is going. Every driving school (OSK) drills this manoeuvre extensively — if it's the one giving you trouble, extra practice hours on the arc are the best-spent money of the whole course.

Task 4: Hill start

You stop on an incline, apply the brake (handbrake, or holding the foot brake) and pull away so that the vehicle does not roll backwards. In a manual car it's a game of clutch and throttle — find the clutch's biting point, add some gas and release the brake smoothly.
