§ 1.

1. This regulation specifies the signs and signals applicable in road traffic, their meaning and their scope of application.

2. Whenever this regulation refers to:

1) a priority road - this means a road signed as a priority road, on which a driver approaching an intersection has right of way over drivers approaching the intersection on a road signed as a minor road;

2) a minor road - this means a road signed as a minor road, on which a driver approaching an intersection is obliged to give way to drivers approaching the intersection on a road signed as a priority road;

3) the Act - this means the Act of 20 June 1997 - Road Traffic Law.

3. The following road signs and signals are used on roads:

1) vertical signs in the form of discs or boards with inscriptions or symbols, which also occur in the form of illuminated signs;

2) road markings in the form of lines, inscriptions and symbols placed on the road surface;

3) light signals given by traffic lights;

4) signals given by persons authorised to do so;

5) sound or vibration signals emitted by devices placed on the road.

4. In addition to the signs referred to in para. 3 point 1, signs relating to the marking of the road corridor and of road structures are used, as well as markings in the form of road safety devices, in particular in connection with the closure of a road or part of it to traffic, or with the conduct on a section of a public road of the studies referred to in Art. 140c(2) point 3 of the Act concerning road signs and signals and road safety devices, and, where necessary, signs with inscriptions indicating how the road is to be used, if this cannot be expressed by the signs specified in the annex to this regulation.

§ 2.

1. A vertical road sign placed on the right-hand side of the carriageway or above the carriageway applies to drivers in all traffic lanes; however, if signs are placed above individual traffic lanes, the sign applies only to drivers in the lane above which the sign is placed. A road sign placed on the left-hand side of the carriageway or of the traffic lanes is a repetition of the sign placed on the right-hand side, unless specific provisions state otherwise.

2. A driver is obliged to comply with a vertical road sign placed on a vehicle emitting flashing yellow signals which is carrying out cleaning, repair or upgrading works on the road.

3. Road signs expressing prohibitions or mandatory instructions relating to the direction of travel, and signs prohibiting the entry of vehicles of specified dimensions, weight or axle loads, do not apply to the driver of a rail vehicle moving along the route designated for it.

4. An inscription or symbol placed on a plate beneath a road sign forms an integral part of the sign.

4a. An inscription given on a plate may specify:

1) the period during which the sign applies;

2) the period of exemption of the road user or type of vehicle indicated by the plate;

3) the road user, part of the road or type of vehicle to which the sign applies or does not apply.

5. If a sign or plate shows the layout of roads at an intersection (a diagram of the intersection) using lines of different width, the wider line indicates the priority road.

6. Road markings reflecting vertical warning or prohibitory signs, or additional signs of cycle routes, are a repetition of the vertical signs used, unless specific provisions state otherwise.

7. The provisions of para. 1 and 4 apply accordingly to light signals used to direct traffic.

8. The patterns of road signs and road signals, the patterns of plates and their list are specified, subject to para. 8a and 9, in the annex to the regulation.

8a. On plates other than those specified by a pattern, symbols identifying the vehicle or the road user are used in accordance with the patterns of signs and plates specified in the annex to the regulation.

9. Signs and signals relating to traffic organisation, and signs specifying the speed, dimensions, weight and axle loads of a vehicle, are given by way of example. This also applies to plates showing vehicles, the layout of roads at an intersection and situations on the road.
