156 questions in this category
Overtaking in Poland means passing a vehicle traveling in the same direction by moving into an adjacent lane or the opposite side of the road. The general rule is to overtake on the left, but there are specific exceptions including overtaking trams, which in most cases must be overtaken on the right. Overtaking is one of the most dangerous maneuvers and is heavily regulated.
Why This Category Matters on the Exam
Overtaking rules generate 3-4 exam questions and represent one of the most safety-critical topics. The exam tests both the general rules and the numerous exceptions and prohibitions. Since improper overtaking causes head-on collisions, the exam heavily penalizes incorrect answers in this category. Understanding when overtaking is forbidden is just as important as knowing how to do it properly.
Common Mistakes and Tips
The most tested Polish-specific rule is that trams must be overtaken on the right, except on one-way streets or when tracks are positioned on the right side of the road. Overtaking is prohibited at pedestrian crossings, on and directly before railway crossings, at intersections (except when overtaking a two-wheeled vehicle or when you are on a priority road), and wherever visibility is insufficient. A common exam trap involves the continuous line: you may begin overtaking before a continuous line but must complete the maneuver before the line begins. Many candidates forget that on multi-lane roads in built-up areas, passing vehicles on the right (in a parallel lane) is not technically overtaking and is permitted, provided you do not change lanes to do so.
